When a VPS is the right answer

A VPS gives you a whole machine: dedicated vCPU and RAM that nobody else is using, full root access, and the freedom to install anything. It is more capable than shared hosting and it is also more responsibility — you own the operating system, the updates and the security of what you install.

Move when shared hosting runs out of CPU, not storage.
The usual signal is a site that is fine at 2am and slow at 8pm, or a background job that keeps getting killed. That is contention for processor time, and more disk will not fix it.
You need root for a reason, or you do not need it.
Custom system packages, a database tuned your way, a long-running worker, or software that simply cannot run on shared hosting are all good reasons. “It sounds faster” is not.
RAM is what you actually run out of first.
A database plus an application runtime plus a cache adds up quickly. Disk is easy to extend later; being short on memory shows up as processes being killed under load.
Someone has to administer it.
Security updates, firewall rules and backups of the server itself are yours. If nobody on your side will do that, managed shared hosting is the safer choice and there is no shame in it.

Every server comes with full root access, a graphical and serial console for when you lock yourself out, NVMe storage, and snapshots so you can undo a bad change.
